A fine painterly impression, with fresh, vibrant colors, on cream China paper, with full margins (3/4 to 1 1/8 inches), in excellent condition. A rare and marvelous example of Rice’s early floral woodcuts. The artist has carefully brushed the color onto the block to evoke the delicate texture of the flower petals. The richly textured celadon background is probably achieved through an impasto application of paint hardened onto the printing surface. Rice produced few impressions (usually less than five) of these early works using oil-based inks and fine Chinese paper which held the color exceptionally well.
