An abstraction of marine mammals.

ABOUT / Ralph Gorvett Jr. was born in Boston and spent his early years in Somerville and Cambridge. Mr. Gorvett attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts. He studied under T. Lux Feininger (painting), Henry Schwarts (still life painting & music), Peter Abate, Court Bennet, and Rene Pisano (sculpture), Alan O’Grady, and Ture Bengtz (drawing and color theory). After graduating in 1971, he moved to Gloucester, MA, and continued pursuing his art privately. Mr. Gorvett is also a serious student of 19th and 20th-century music as seen through its history, philosophy, criticism, and biography. His interest in music has been a significant influence on his visual work. His current interests are as a draftsman, using the medium of ballpoint pen. These are large-scale drawings that require months of working and reworking the laying of inks on paper. The subjects are often of his dog and amorphic abstractions based on the natural world. Mr. Gorvett presently lives and works in Ogunquit, Maine.
