Joe (Joseph John) Jones was born in St Louis. Although self-taught, his midwestern Regionalist style paintings received awards as early as 1931. During the Depression he joined the Communist Party, and worked for the WPA, fot which he did several murals. Jones moved to New York in 1935, received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1937, and had work included a show at the Carnegie Institute in Pennsylvania. After WWII, his Social Realist style gave way to abstraction and minimalism, as seen in these works.BEACH SCENE I and BEACH SCENE II
