John Cline’s drawings are mesmerizing. Cline, who is a practicing architect, seems to be able to balance color, shape, and line density as naturally as breathing. “Untitled 138” is one of our favorite examples of this superb sense of equilibrium. In the detail images, the viewer can see the structural planning that served as the basis for the drawing. As the drawing grew, Cline diligently added layers of linear patterns, filled in shapes from intersecting lines, and also drew freehand details. All of this work somehow works cohesively to create an undulating, deeply interesting composition that we cannot tear our eyes from.
