FRANCES H. GEARHART (1869 – 1958)

ON AND UP  c. 1937

Color block print. Signed and titled in pencil. Edition unknown but rarely appears on the market. Large image 12 1/8 x 11 3/4”, sheet 14 ½ x 13 3/8”.  Very good, beautiful impression. Very good condition on Gearhart’s thicker fibrous japan paper with full margins. The usual tack holes along the right sheet edge, used for printing.  Some minor soft creases in the margins. Small repair upper left sheet edge corner alongside a small bit of old tape

One of Gearhart’s finest late grand images. It is her 4th largest landscape. Same size as Gustave Baumann's large scenes.

The subject is Lake Tahoe depicted in another rare large Gearhart. The background mountains in this block print are similar to those in Lake Tahoe.

Provenance: The Whitmore Collection - The Print Corner, Hingham, MA. Their Gearhart inventory number, lower left. They were Gearhart’s principal dealer in the East in the 30’s.
