Evan Lindquist created the engraving "Cosmos" in an edition of 100 in 1971. This impression is the last of the entire edition. The philosopher Pythagoras first used the term cosmos (Ancient Greek: κόσμος) for the order of the universe. The term became part of modern language in the 19th century when geographer–polymath Alexander von Humboldt resurrected the use of the word from the ancient Greek, assigned it to his five-volume treatise, Kosmos, which influenced modern and somewhat holistic perception of the universe as one interacting entity.

Evan Lindquist was born in Salina, Kansas, in 1936 and grew up in Emporia, Kansas. He taught printmaking and drawing at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro for forty years and retired from teaching in 2003. His earned his MFA degree from the University of Iowa in printmaking with Mauricio Lasansky and his BSE degree from Emporia State University. Honors include the Lifetime Achievement Award, presented by The Society of American Graphic Artists (SAGA); The Arkansas Governor’s Lifetime Achievement Award; Emporia State University Distinguished Alumni Award. Lindquist was named to the Centennial list of 100 most distinguished faculty at Arkansas State University 1909-2009. He was honored as Outstanding Faculty Member at ASU and appointed First Chairman of the President’s Fellows. He founded the Delta National Small Prints Exhibition.
