David SMITH-HARRISON
As the artist writes in his artist’s statement, drawing is central to David Smith-Harrison's work. His process of observation and intensive study that accompanies his drawing practice are apparent in his fantastical intaglio prints. With detailed fruit trees and architectural renderings, his work is firmly rooted in reality. However, the combination of these elements, accompanied by a rich color palette and sketched accents throughout the etching plate, create a dreamlike quality to his work. The viewer’s eye reverberates between the imagery and intricately sketched details, all the while being dazzled by his rich gemstone colors. There is a harmony of composition that is visually satisfying while inviting the viewer to pause and reflect on all that each print has to offer. Recipient of many awards and solo exhibitions, Smith-Harrison's work is not only something to marvel, but into which one can dive deeply.
