Refregier was an artist for the Works Progress Administration (WPA) He did several murals in the San Francisco area. This lithograph is one of his largest works and is derived from a mural "Finding Gold at Sutter's Mill, 1948", for Rincon Annex Post Office, San Francisco, California, 1948. Location, San Francisco Mission and Spear, South of Market and also based on a large color sketch Finding Gold at Sutter's Mill.
