Pine trees line the shore of the beach, wind blowing the branches as the waves crash against the shore in the evening light. Izumo is in Shimane Prefecture and borders the Sea of Japan, and is famous for its scenic cloud patterns, as the name Izumo means “clouds appear”. Very atmospheric, this version includes shades of green as well as blue; there is another version done with a much lighter palette, indicating a different time of evening. This coloration is very similar to the example from the Balcer collection at the VMFA. With the earliest Watanabe seal used during this period, right, used between 1924-1930, making this a first edition. With publisher's diamond-shaped paper label on verso with name and address in English: S. Watanabe, 9 Nishi 8-chome, Ginza, Tokyo (also in Japanese). An example of this work with the same Watanabe seal was sold at Sotheby’s London in 2022 for $29,900.
