Artist: Kasamatsu Shirō (1898-1991)
Title: Spring Rain at Kinokuni Mound 紀の国塚 梅雨  Date: 1938

We see a dramatic silhouette of a large pine tree, standing out against a light drizzle. Its dark silhouette against the fine rain is dramatic and exact, and its bark has been beautifully printed. A woman and her child walk by, holding umbrellas aloft. When the puruple in the child’s umbrella is completely unfaded, as here, one can be sure that this work has pristine colors. Scarce to find in this first edition with the Watanabe seal used between 1930-1942, right margin, as most examples are postwar. The rain is very effectively printed, and the overall printing in this first edition is much superior to later editions. One of Shiro’s most appreciated Watanabe-printed prewar landscapes.

Condition: Excellent impression, color and condition. Very minor handling creases in upper margin.  Dimensions:38.9 x 26.5 cm
