Translating Thompson's sculptural ideas into prints is always a daunting task. This plate, like several other recent prints, was cut by hand from a shaped template and refined by the artist. Master printer James Stroud then applied an even aquatint to the surface and etched it to 100% saturation. A purple intaglio ink was then applied to the surface and then wiped as usual. A transparent yellow ink was then rolled over the surface in one pass using a large roller. When passed through the press, the pressure mixes the two colors creating a warm reddish brown hue that is somehow darker around the perimeter of the plate, a yet unexplained phenomenon but very happy accident. The plate was printed in an edition of 35.
