Sperry Andrews, Amer., (1917-2005), "Church", Color Monotype, ca.1940, 9 x 12, signed with initials in image lower right, on buff wove paper, original scotch tape to four margin corners from original mount. This moody monotype by Sperry Andrews demonstrates the early investigation of cubist fracture in his work, likely inspired by his study with Morris Kantor at the Art Student's League in the late 1930's. Andrews and his wife, Doris, also an artist, would later purchase the home, studios and property of Mahonri Young, which originally belonged to the American Impressionist painter J. Alden Weir. Thus Sperry and Doris became the 3rd continuous generation of artists to live and work at this historic site, leading a grassroots effort to save the property from development and earning Weir Farm's eventual designation as Connecticut's only National Park. Andrews, who was a member of the National Academy, is deserving of greater recognition for his lifetime dedicated to painting and drawing en plein air, excelling at both.
