Artist: Kawase Hasui 川瀬巴水 (1883-1957)
Title: Daybreak over Lake Yamanaka 山中湖の暁 Date: 1931
Mount Fuji rises above Lake Yamanaka’s deserted shoreline, the human presence indirectly felt in the moored wooden boat. Hasui was very deliberate when he composed his scenes, much like a cameraman with a viewfinder. Here he chose a view that did not show a complete reflection of the great mountain, as we see a reflected shimmer of only one side of the peak. The peak of Fuji-san is orange, and the surrounding sky is yellow below and blue above. The trees on the shoreline are green in the foreground and transition to a blue as the distance increases, exactly as it would be seen if we were at this spot in person. With the Watanabe seal used between 1930 and 1942, this example may be considered a first edition. With the “Made in Japan” seal verso, that was applied to works intended for export in the early 1930s.
