Bishop, Isabel. LUNCH COUNTER - STUDY. Ink and wash, circa 1940. Two-sided drawing on heavy paper, one side quite "finished" and signed, the other a sketch of the same subject. "Lunch Counter" exists as a painting, which is in the Philips Collection, and as an etching, Teller 24, both from 1940. Bishop's studio was on Union Square in Manhattan, and she would often go down onto the street to sketch. Provenance, Midtown Galleries, NY, with their early label showing "New York 22, N.Y." in the address (five digit zip codes were introduced in 1963). The primary drawing is 10 1/4 x 4 5/8 inches (image), on an irregularly cut sheet 12 1/4 x 6 inches; the secondary drawing fills the verso of the sheet. Adhesive residue at the top, a few tack holes, implying that this was a working drawing, tacked up for reference. The primary image lightly toned from prior framing. Overall in Very Good to Excellent condition. Bishop drawings which can be related to paintings or prints are rare.
