Lithograph, 1948, edition unknown. 11 3/4 x 8 3/4 in. Initialed and dated on the stone, lower right. Signed in pencil. Here we have a fine impression with full margins. The condition is also fine. Muhlstaff was a gifted realist painter and lithographer who worked in an intensely detailed style reminiscent of the 17th century Dutch painters. The artist was born in ’s-Hertogenbosch and later lived in Rotterdam, Leiden and Zaandam. He was related to H.P. Bremmer who was the important advisor to Helene Kröller-Müller. Muhlstaff was part of the group of artists close to Bremmer that included Charley Toorop and Mendes de Costa, among others. Muhlstaff had a large collection of old Dutch pottery which he used for his paintings and prints. According to a pencil notation on the old mat, this print belonged to H.P. Bremmer.
