Title: In the Snow, Nakayama Shichiri Road, Hida 飛騨中山七里 Series: Souvenirs of Travel, Third Series (Tabi miyage dai sanshu) 旅のおみやげ第3弾
Date: 1924
A village is tucked in for the evening, the homes looking cozy and warm despite the thickly blowing snow. We see a dark sky, white and grey mauntains and fields, and at bottom a deep blue river. Narazaki wrote: “Hasui undertook an extensive trip lasting 102 days, traveling from the Koshu to the Kiso roads and then on to Hida Takayama [in Gifu prefecture]. The nakayama-shichiiri road appears early on in his sketches from this journey.... The distant mountains are printed without contour lines, conveying the sense that they are being buried under the heavy snow” With the seal used by Watanabe between 1932 and 1941. An example of this design with the 1920s seal sold in December of 2023 for $32,000 at Sothebys in London.
