Title: Night Rain at Tago 田子の夜雨
Series: 伊豆八景之内 Eight Views of Izu Date: 1939
It is a dark and stormy night, the only sign of humanity a small town that is glimpsed as faint lights on the distant shore. Rain falls in grey and white diagonal streaks, and all colors have been muted due to the decreasing daylight. Today there is a beach called Tago-Sebama, and it does feature this steep, rocky terrain topped with pine trees. Tago is located in the area in Nishiizu, which is on the western coast of the Izu Peninsula, a treasured nature area about three hours south of Tokyo. It includes the Izu Peninsula Geopark, designated a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2018. The round Watanabe seal is lower left. This may be considered a first edition, as all museum examples as well as the catalogue raisonné work have this round Watanabe seal.
