Artist: Masao Maeda 前田政雄 (1904-1974)
Title: Lake Tôya (Tôya ko 洞爺湖) Date: ca. 1929
Series: Eight Views of Hokkaido (Hokkaido Hakkei 北海道八景)
A sturdy brown pier extends invitingly onto Lake Toya; not far away the artist has depicted big island, Ô-shima, in front of Benten Island, and on the right, Manju Islands. It seems to be strong summer shower, yuudachi, the variegated cloud layers above reflecting on the waters below as dark, vaporous shapes. The technique of the striating grey in the sky is unique and effective, and the work punches above its size in terms of visual impact. There is blindprinting in the rain, an unusual touch on a sosaku hanga work. This was Maeda’s first print series, and it took two years for him to complete. Scarce.
Condition: Excellent impression, color and condition. Two minor hinging remnants, verso.
