Title: Mount Fuji from Okitsu Date: Ca. 1929-32
Series: Mount Fuji in the Four Seasons (Shiki no Fuji)
Our view is from the breakers coming onshore from the sea; we are suspended above the waves. Mount Fuji rises against a brilliant orange sky, clouds all around. In the foreground we see breaking waves and two large rocks, with sailboats in the background. The unique and numerous textures of this print are notable; there are orange layers in the sky and many small wavelets in the sea. In the middle distance is a range of smaller mountains.Okitsu was station seventeen on the Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido, a subject that was favored by many ukiyo-e artists in the Edo period, most especially Hiroshige.
