Artist: Tsukioka Yoshitoshi
Title: Oniwaka Observing the Great Carp in the Pool
Series: “Thirty-Six Ghosts” (Shinkei sanjurokkaisen)
Date: 1889

Oniwaka (the young Benkei) with his knife drawn behind him and mind filled with revenge, intently stalks the monster carp that devoured his mother. Yoshitoshi has reached full maturity as an artist with this series, and captivates his audience using suspense rather than the outright bloodshed of his earlier series. From the early state (probably 1st edition) with the extra eddies that cross in the blue above the carp.
