Sir Jacob Epstein was an American-British sculptor who strongly influenced the development of Modernism in England with his monumental, anti-classical style.  His knighthood was for his contribution to art. This drawing depicts Betty Peters, a tall, voluptious dark-skinned model whom Epstein favoured from the late 1920s to the mid-1940s. There are many sculptures in which she can be identified. A drawing showing her with her hair the same length and in a very similar pose was exhibited at the Godfrey Phillips Gallery, London, in 1928.

Signed in crayon. Extremely pale mat-burn, upper paper edge slightly cockled, generally in very good condition.
