Bishop, Isabel. SNACK BAR. T. 53. Etching, 1959. 6 7/8 x 4 3/8 inches; 174 x 111. Signed and titled in pencil and inscribed "Love to Helen Goodall." A rare early proof printed by the artist and given as a gift to a friend. There was an edition of 50 printed in 1978 by Stephen Sholinsky. A fine impression in very good condition, with tape residue at the upper corners.

Bishop made prints all during her career, many by going down to watch the passing scene in Manhattan's Union Square, where she had her studio. Sometimes she would sketch, sometimes work directly on a plate. She kept a small press in her studio, and printed on it herself. She rarely editioned these prints at the time she made them, or, if she did, she usually failed to complete even small editions, apparently because of lack of demand. She would pull occasional prints to give as gifts, and these are, like this often inscribed, and, as Bishop was not a skilled printer, there is often evidence of the hand of the artist in the form of fingerprints or ink blots in the margins. Later in her life she undertook a project with Sylvan Cole of Associated American Artists and Master Printer Stephen Sholinsky to make editions of the prints, and most of her prints became editions, of 25, 50, or 75 in this way. These later prints are much more professional, cleaner, and on better papers than the proofs Bishop made herself. We offer many of these, as prices much below those for the rare personally printed proofs such as this.
