FRANCES H. GEARHART (1869-1958)

THE OLD PINE (aka Big Pine) c. 1930-32

Color block print signed and titled in pencil. 11 1/2" x 10". Scarce image - Sheet 14 1/4" x 10 1/4", with the usual tack holes along the right sheet edge used for printing,  A bit of the usual slight discoloration around the image from the migration of printing oils over time that is common in Gearharts. Minor soiling in the margins. Typical scattered stray ink here and there. Loss to the upper tips of sheet. Every Gearhart is individually inked and printed with unique quirks. And no two are identical. In this example the key block in particular is now much less dominant allowing the atmospheric perspective to be more dominating.

A very good, strong, large scale image from her mature period.

Provenance: The Print Corner, Hingham MA assumed by the Whitmore estate. The Print Corner inventory number lower left sheet corner. They were Gearhart's primary East Coast dealer in the 30's.

Arts and Crafts, Japanese Prints, Americana, Color woodcuts, California Art.
