Davis, Vestie E. (African-American, 1903-1978) THE PARACHUTE JUMP,
CONEY ISLAND. Ink on canvas board, 1954. Signed "Vesty Davis" and dated,
lower right. 16 x 12 inches. In excellent condition. Vestie Davis was
self-taught. He began painting in 1947, taking New York city landmarks
as his subject. This work is one of many he did of various attractions
at Coney Island, and one of many he did of the Parachute Jump, including
one which was part of a Coney Island scene used as a cover of the New
Yorker in 1958. According to AskArt's biographical information on him,
Davis signed work both as "Vesty Davis" and as "Vestie E. Davis," and we
have seen examples of work with both signatures.
