From the Six Triumphs of Petrarch. Landau 116, only state, a of b with the guide-lines still showing clearly in the inscription
Provenance: Albertina duplicate (Lugt 5e, 5h) : Helmut Rumbler (pencil insription on mount)
A brilliant, rich impression, trimmed on
the platemark all round. Inconspicuous small repairs in the upper right corner,
a thin lower right corner, generally in very good condition. With
hand-corrections to two letters in the inscription, as are also visible in
Landau’s illustrated example.
Landau posits
a connection between the frieze-like compositions of Pencz’s Triumphs and the
monochrome decorations then fashionable on Roman house facades, where the horizontal
architectural constraints made processions and triumphs an appropriate theme.
