Artist: Un'ichi Hiratsuka 平塚運一 (1895-1997)

Title: Cape Kasuga in Sado Island 佐渡春日岬 (First Edition)  Date: 1932

A timeless Japanese stone lantern that must serve as a lighthouse for ships is situated on a high, grassy hilltop overlooking the Sea of Japan. It seems to be standing watch like a sentinel over the calm seascape.  The color woodblock print also includes a cover sheet, the original paper mat and an accompanying printed sheet with two additional pages of information in Japanese that were authored by the artist himself. In it, he describes his visit to Sado Island and all the ways that it charmed him. This is from the first, limited edition of 100 sheets, numbered 51. The informational sheet is dated Showa 7, or 1932. Hiratsuka was a leading figure in the sosaku hanga movement and almost all of his later works (after ca. 1955)  were done in black and white. He is one of the leading figures of the sosaku hanga movement, and even taught wood carving to Shiko Munakata. Between 1935 and 1944 Hiratsuka taught the first blockprinting course at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts.
