Embarcadère sur la Garonne, Bordeaux (original French title)
Etching and aquatint printed in four colors on laid paper.
Reference: Lotz-Brissonneau 106.
Edition of 275 before letters.
Published by Société des Amis des Arts de Bordeaux.
Plate: 12 ½ x 14 ⅝ inches.
Image size: 10 3/4 x 13 3/8 inches.
The image is somewhat smaller than the plate, indicated by the difference in sizes listed above. It is not unusual for etchers to leave a blank area around the etched composition.
Very fine impression in very good condition.
A woman, the wife of the artist, is stepping off the jetty, jutting into the Garonne river. She holds a bouquet of flowers, maybe received from the man, said to be her husband, in the lower right corner of the image. In the background, many sailboats and large sail ships are docked in the harbor of Bordeaux. This is an iconic image by Auguste Lepère, one of the most prolific etchers and pure line engravers of the late 19th century; and an artist whose compositional strength always amazes.
